UMC - Department of Family Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery

 

The University of Mississippi Medical Center, Department of Family Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery will sponsor the

Health Care Disparities, Inner City and Rural High Schools and Sports Medicine Initiative.  The purpose of this

project is to inspire and initiate careers in health care through the development of sports medicine classes, sports medicine

teams, sports medicine clinics, and sports medicine role models for students in predominantly African-American high schools

in Mississippi .

  Specific goals for the project are:

 

  • Place a certified Athletic Trainer, who is also certified to teach secondary school in Mississippi, on the faculty of each high school with joint appointment to the staff of University Sports Medicine.
  • Equip and furnish a sports medicine training room in each high school to include AED placement.
  • Provide certified athletic trainer medical coverage for athletic activities of the school(s).
  • Organize and supervise students to become student athletic trainers for the assistance in the care of the athletic teams at the schools.
  • Introduce students enrolled in the classes to various aspects of health care professions through school seminars given by health care providers and field trips to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
