Mississippi Institute for Improvement of Geographic Minority Health

Tougaloo College

In an effort to continue addressing health disparities as they rise in the Mississippi Delta communities and among the disadvantaged minority populations, Tougaloo College through partnership with the Mississippi Institute for Improvement of Geographic Minority Health implemented a project entitled “Addressing Health Disparities by Reaching Out.” This project facilitates the establishment of a community based participatory research (CBPR) resource in the Delta and provides health and wellness education, nutrition education, and physical fitness programs in twenty-six counties throughout Mississippi.  The programs and services are designed to effect long-term improvements in the social, behavioral and environmental health of these counties.

GOAL I:

To mobilize grassroots and community-based organizations in the targeted counties to improve health outcomes for rural disadvantaged and minority populations through community based participatory research (CBPR).

GOAL II:

To provide health and wellness education, nutrition education, and physical fitness programs to the on-campus community and the rural disadvantaged minority populations in the target counties that will reduce high risk unhealthy behaviors, increase knowledge and awareness regarding diabetes, heart disease and stroke, cancer, infant mortality, child and adult immunizations, HIV/AIDS, and behaviors that lead to healthier lifestyles choices.
