Visiting Scholar Program

 

The purpose of the Visiting Scholar Program is to foster the development of research on projects related to minority health and health disparities. The Research Core allows for two Visiting Scholars to come to Jackson, MS during the course of the year, for visits expected to last for 3-5 days. The Scholars will be expected to: 1) provide formal education and special skills research training for faculty and students; 2) mentor students in the scholar's areas of expertise; 3) consult with faculty on program and infrastructure development; 4) work at the interface of the university and the community to improve community outreach and information-sharing; and 5) share ideas and participate in discussions with faculty and  administrators that can lead to new initiatives or strategic directions.

 

The following is a summary of the Scope of Work or Activities expected of the Scholar during the residency:

 

  • Deliver a lecture related to minority health and health disparities.
  • Prepare a publishable paper (within 6 months of the Visit).
  • Lead a research seminar on a subject of one’s choice or present a training workshop.
  • Mentor and/or meet with faculty and students per request and appointment.
  • Consult with Institute administrators on program, infrastructure and strategic development.
  • Meet with Community and Institutional Advisory Boards and/or Partners Liaison Committee members.
  • Meet with representatives of local media.
  • Participate in 1-2 evening activities.
