Health Services Core – Led by a young and talented visionary Ms. Tekla Sanders, the goal of the Health Services Core is to develop and assess the effectiveness of new community-based service delivery models that address health disparities and issues of access to care.  Two major projects of the core are establishing a Competitive Health Services Grant Program and establishing a Visiting Scholars Program.  Ongoing programs occur through our partners and subawards:

  • Tougaloo CollegeMs. Felicia Whittington directs the Addressing Health Disparities by Reaching Out project.  It utilizes the Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) in the Delta and provides health and wellness education and physical fitness programs in twenty-six counties.
  • Diabetes Foundation of MississippiMs. Mary Fortune directs this program of promoting diabetes education, screening and early referral in African American Churches.
  • Mississippi Hospital AssociationThe Association’s Health, Research, and Education Foundation provides leadership for the Increasing Workforce in Rural Mississippi project.
  • UMC - Department of Family Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery join together to sponsor the High School Sports Medicine Initiative which is achieving increasing health knowledge through sports.
