Health Professional Alliance Partnership A comprehensive program designed to accomplish the goals of increased enrollment and retention to assure the academic progression and timely graduation of an increased number of underserved, underrepresented individuals in the field of medicine, dentistry, and health related professions. The Health Professional Alliance Partnership consists of formal partnerships with: 1) The University of Mississippi Medical Center and two undergraduate institutions: Alcorn State University and Tougaloo College; 2) University of Mississippi Medical Center AHEC Program; and 3) secondary schools in Claiborne and Jefferson County Public Schools and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. The following special programs will be implemented: EXCEL Program – The EXCEL program is conducted at Alcorn State University and Tougaloo College. The program targets underserved, underrepresented high school students in grades 9-12. The students spend four weeks preparing for college matriculation. College representatives, students and health care professionals will be invited to share information about college, the admissions process, health care careers, and being a health care professional. Parents are invited to participate in special activities. Medical Cooperative Program (MEDCORP I & II) - The MEDCORP I & II program is a four week summer program designed to provide individuals from underserved, underrepresented backgrounds mathematics and science education that will enhance their preparation for entrance in a health profession school. The MEDCORP program is conducted at Alcorn State University and Tougaloo College. The students at this level of the program are pre-freshman and pre-sophomores.
